Coatings for structural and annealed steels

Coating When to choose it
TiN – titanium nitride ★ The universal coating: less friction and less sticking, longer life on structural steels and common materials.
Steam oxide (steam tempering) Porous oxide layer that retains the lubricant and reduces cold welding: austenitic stainless steels and soft, "gummy" steels.
TiCN – titanium carbonitride Harder and more abrasion-resistant than TiN: quenched and tempered steels, cast irons and series production.
Bright (uncoated) The sharpest possible cutting edge: aluminium, copper and soft materials that do not tolerate rounded edges.

★ INNOT first choice for this material. Every tap can be supplied with any coating in the range: specify it in your request.

Starting data

Printable cutting data tableAll the data on this page in an INNOT PDF to keep in the shop.Download PDF
Cutting speed Vc 10 – 20 m/min (lower value for uncoated substrate or machines with a compensating chuck)
Feed Equal to the thread pitch: synchronised tapping or chuck with axial compensation
Lubrication 6 – 10 % emulsion or cutting oil
Thread Spindle speed (n)
M6 530 – 1.060
M10 320 – 640
M16 200 – 400
M24 130 – 270

Guide values to be adapted to machine, clamping and lubrication. n = Vc × 1000 / (π × d).

Tips for use

  • The chip exits ahead of the tap: leave free space under the part so it can fall without jamming.
  • The long chamfer spreads the cut over more teeth and lasts longer: do not use this tap in blind holes.
  • On very soft steels (below 400 N/mm²) choose steam oxide: it prevents burrs and cold welding on the thread.
  • Chamfer the hole entry at 90°: clean start and no burr on the first thread.
