Carbide and coatings
Carbide and coatings
Our solid end mills and drills are designed around your part: together we choose the carbide rod, geometry and coating best suited to material, machine and operation.

Available coatings
On end mills and drills, also on non-catalogue tools.
| Coating | Hardness (HV) | T max (°C) | Friction | Materials | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| TiNTitanium nitride | ≈ 2300 | 600 | 0,4–0,5 | PK | General use on non-alloy steels and cast irons, HSS tools. Easy to recognise by its gold colour. |
| TiCNTitanium carbonitride | ≈ 3000 | 400 | 0,25–0,4 | PM | Harder and smoother than TiN: steels and stainless steels at medium speeds, tapping and reaming. |
| TiAlNTitanium aluminium nitride | ≈ 3300 | 800 | 0,5 | PK | Alloy steels and cast irons at high speed with emulsion. Good resistance to abrasive wear. |
| AlTiNAluminium titanium nitride | ≈ 3500 | 900 | 0,6 | PKH | High aluminium content: quenched and tempered and hardened steels, dry machining and HSM. |
| AlCrNAluminium chromium nitride | ≈ 3200 | 1100 | 0,35 | PMS | Excellent resistance to oxidation and wear: drills and end mills for steels and stainless steels, also dry. |
| TiSiNTitanium silicon nitride | ≈ 3800 | 1100 | 0,4 | HP | Very high hot hardness: hardened steels and mould finishing. |
| AlTiSiNAl-Ti-Si-N nano-composite | ≈ 4200 | 1200 | 0,45 | HPK | Nano-crystals in an amorphous matrix: hardened materials, high speed and high cutting temperatures. |
| AlCrSiNAl-Cr-Si-N nano-composite | ≈ 4000 | 1100 | 0,5 | SMN | Titanium, superalloys and aluminium alloys with silicon over 12%. |
| CrNChromium nitride | ≈ 1800 | 700 | 0,3 | NS | Anti-adhesion: copper, brass, bronze and titanium. Low friction and good toughness. |
| ZrNZirconium nitride | ≈ 2800 | 600 | 0,4 | N | Aluminium and light alloys: prevents built-up edge. |
| TiB2Titanium diboride | ≈ 3500 | 800 | 0,4 | NS | Very smooth surface, chemically inert with aluminium and titanium: no sticking. |
| DLCAmorphous carbon (a-C:H) | ≈ 2000 | 400 | 0,1 | N | Very low friction: aluminium, copper, plastics and sticky materials. |
| ta-CTetrahedral carbon (hard DLC) | ≈ 4500 | 450 | 0,1 | N | High-hardness DLC: aluminium with silicon, graphite and composites. |
| CVD diamondPolycrystalline diamond | 8000–10000 | 600 | 0,1 | N | Graphite, carbon and glass fibre composites (CFRP/GFRP), hypereutectic aluminium, green ceramics. |
| UncoatedPolished carbide | — | — | — | N | Aluminium, plastics and brass, when you need the sharpest possible cutting edge. |
Guide values from technical literature: hardness, temperature and friction vary with the deposition process and thickness. Multilayer and combined coatings are also available (e.g. AlTiN + TiSiN).
Carbide grades (ROD bars)
Solid rods or rods with coolant holes, ground and cut to length.
| Carbide grade | WC grain (µm) | Cobalt (%) | Hardness (HRA) | Transverse rupture strength (GPa) | Application |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ultra-fine | 0,2–0,4 | 6–9 | 93,5–94,5 | 3,5–4,0 | Hardened steels, micro-tools below Ø3, precision finishing. |
| Universal submicron | 0,5–0,8 | 8–10 | 92,5–93,5 | ≈ 4,0 | The first choice for end mills and drills: steels, cast irons and stainless steels. |
| Tough submicron | 0,6–0,8 | 11–12 | 91,5–92,5 | 4,2–4,5 | Stainless steels, titanium, superalloys, interrupted cuts and long drills. |
| High-toughness fine grain | 0,8–1,3 | 12–15 | 90–91,5 | 3,5–3,8 | Heavy roughing, aluminium, large diameters and less rigid machines. |
More cobalt = more toughness; finer grain and less cobalt = more hardness and a sharper edge. We choose the rod with you according to material, diameter and process stability.
